Health Care Benefits

WorkplaceNL recognizes that the timely provision of appropriate health care services is an integral part of the injured worker's recovery and early and safe return to work.

WorkplaceNL will cover health care services and benefits to an injured worker where, in its opinion, the health care service is appropriate with respect to the worker's compensable injury, is medically effective and is consistent with accepted health care practices.

WorkplaceNL covers health care services rendered by health care providers whose professional services are regulated in and for the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Please bring your MCP number to all medical appointments.

Notice to Clients receiving Chiropractic Care

WorkplaceNL has become aware that some members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Chiropractic Association (NLCA) has informed patients that, effective November 1, 2017, they will no longer treat injured workers on a WorkplaceNL claim.

As a result, this may have caused some confusion around payment for chiropractic services for injured workers.

The information below provides clarity for our injured worker clients.

Q. Can I continue to receive chiropractic treatment?  Yes, injured workers who are entitled to health care benefits from WorkplaceNL as a result of a workplace injury may continue to receive chiropractic care.

Q. What if my chiropractor will not provide services? WorkplaceNL will help you find another chiropractor or work with your primary health care provider to consider other treatment options.

Q. Can I pay my chiropractor directly, and seek reimbursement from WorkplaceNL? WorkplaceNL is required to pay the chiropractor directly. Injured workers do not pay out-of-pocket for approved chiropractic care related to their workplace injury while on a WorkplaceNL claim.

Q. What if I have paid my chiropractor? If you have already paid directly for chiropractic services, please contact your Case Manager or Extended Services Adjudicator. WorkplaceNL will work with you to find alternative treatment.

Q. How are fees determined for chiropractors treating injured workers? WorkplaceNL has made several attempts to reach an agreement with the NLCA. Under section 85 of the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Act, WorkplaceNL has increased the fees for services and reports from chiropractors, effective November 1, 2017. While there is no legislative requirement to negotiate fees, attempts were made to come to mutual agreement with NLCA before WorkplaceNL sets fees.
