TA Loeffler – What is Your Everest?                                                            

TA motivates her audiences to embrace the challenge of change.  She translates her epic adventures into a multimedia presentation that enthralls, educates, and entertains. TA’s riveting story of climbing some of the world’s highest peaks, including Everest, will inspire you to reach beyond what you thought was possible.  

Psychological Health and Safety: An Emerging Issue     

Protecting workers mental health is gaining a lot of interest and attention today. Poor mental health not only hurts the individual, it hurts the organization. Incorporating psychological health and safety in business models for an overall healthy workplace is becoming more prevalent. In this session, we will discuss the evolution of psychological health and safety in the workplace and what employers can do to create psychologically healthy and safe workplaces.

Scents and Sensibility:  Understanding Scents in the Workplace

Your scented products may be having a larger impact at your workplace than you are aware!  Chemicals are often hidden in many products, causing some people to become sick, especially those with allergies, asthma and other respiratory illnesses.  We all have a role in limiting the amount of scented products we use in the workplace.  Participants will learn every individual can have an impact on maintaining good air quality in their workplace.

Enhancing the Safety Culture of your Organization: Leading the Way  

An organization’s safety culture is shaped by its attitudes, beliefs, perceptions, and values towards workplace health and safety.  OHS leadership doesn’t stop with the employer and management.  Workers can also lead the way in building a positive safety culture.  When occupational health and safety (OHS) initiatives are encouraged and supported, working in a healthy and safe manner becomes second nature.  This session will help you assess your safety culture and empowering leaders at the worker level to enhance it. 

Protecting Vulnerable Workers  

Measures taken by employers to protect workers are typically based on the nature of the job and its hazards, instead of the person who performs it.  Some workers are more vulnerable to workplace injuries and illnesses than others.  While vulnerable workers may vary, they typically have one trait in common, they are often unprepared to deal with the hazards they face on the job.  This session will discuss the definition of a vulnerable worker and precarious employment; and how to protect those in our workforce that are vulnerable.

Honesty in Communications – Aiden Hibbs

Honesty is always the best policy!  So when we communicate we need to exam how we deliver the truth and what defines being honest.  In his presentation, Aiden Hibbs will offer his perspective on honesty in communication that will leave the audience feeling confident about how to construct a message truthfully without compromising sensitive information. 

Creating a Psychologically Safe Working Environment: An Employer’s Experience

Tracy Lewis, Newfoundland Labrador Liquor Corporation (NLC)                 

 

Having good psychological health is crucial to overall health and well-being. The work environment is one of many settings that have an impact on psychological health.  In October 2017, the NLC was awarded the silver medal from OHS Canada’s Safest Employers gala for its efforts in building a Psychologically Safe Workplace.  Tracy will discuss NLC’s journey and efforts for creating both a psychologically safe work environment, as well as one that engages staff to change the way they think about, act towards and support mental health to help build a greater understanding and empathy towards those facing a mental health problem and/or mental illness.  

Partnering to Improve Safety and Return to Work Outcomes     

“Safer Together” is a joint initiative between WorkplaceNL and Eastern Health  which began in the Fall of 2016.  The goal of the initiative was to promote workplace safety and decrease injuries among health care employees.  A multifaceted program was proposed comprised of four main components; safe resident handling, training to mitigate the risk of injury due to resident aggression, safe manual materials training program and Early and Safe Return to Work.  This session will discuss the benefits of a joint initiative and resulting successes.  

Workplace Injuries: Don’t FALL for Them       

Falls account for approximately 18% of all workplace injuries in Newfoundland and Labrador. This has been identified as a current and emerging issue in the new WorkplaceNL Injury Prevention Strategy.  This session will discuss the prevalence of falls in the workplace, strategies to integrate Fall Prevention Programs, as well as, practical tips and techniques to prevent falls and the human factors that surround them. 

Assessing the Risk of Workplace Violence

Everyone has the right to work in a safe, healthy workplace. Yet, workplace violence continues to occur in Newfoundland and Labrador.  In the last 10 years, the occurrence of assaults and violent acts in the province has increased by over 200 percent. Although the risk of workplace violence is higher in industries such as health care, service and retail, any workplace with public access is at risk.  This session will discuss the requirement for, and the process to complete, a workplace violence risk assessment.  

Cannabis: Impairment in the Workplace

With the recent legalization of recreational cannabis, many employers are left wondering how this change will impact workplace safety.  This session will discuss the rights and obligations of employers and employees with respect to the use of drugs and alcohol in the workplace, and the performance of work under the influence of these substances.  Participants will gain tips on how their organizations can ensure they have a robust program that balances the need for safety against human rights obligations.

Kayla Butt, Low Vision Specialist (CNIB)                                          

The CNIB Industrial Eye Safety Program educates workers about eye safety in the workplace and motivates them to follow safe work practices. In particular, it focuses on the consequences associated with eye injuries.  This session uses a combination of real-life stories, shocking visuals and interactive exercises. The goal is to resonate with the audience on a level that makes them consider the personal cost of an eye injury and motivates them to be diligent about wearing appropriate eye protection and following workplace safety protocols.
