WorkplaceNL Continues to Pay Chiropractors Directly for Services
Tuesday, October 31, 2017

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

St. John’s, NL WorkplaceNL confirms that injured workers who are entitled to health care benefits from WorkplaceNL as a result of a workplace injury may continue to receive chiropractic care.

The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between WorkplaceNL and chiropractors in the province expired in 2016. Since that time, WorkplaceNL has made several attempts to reach an agreement with the Newfoundland and Labrador Chiropractic Association (NLCA). WorkplaceNL has continued to pay chiropractors, with a fee increase of up to 10 per cent for services and reports becoming effective November 1, 2017.

Despite this significant fee increase, WorkplaceNL has become aware that the NLCA informed patients that, effective November 1, 2017, they will no longer treat injured workers on a WorkplaceNL claim.

Chiropractors in Newfoundland and Labrador are, and continue to be, paid above the national average in Canada for services to injured workers. The NLCA has requested to be paid the same as physicians for reports. However, WorkplaceNL does not require the same level of reporting from chiropractors.

“We are contacting our clients to ensure that they receive the medical care to which they are entitled. WorkplaceNL recognizes that chiropractic treatment can be an effective part of the medical management or recovery-at-work process,” said Dennis Hogan, CEO, WorkplaceNL.

Injured workers are advised to not pay out-of-pocket for chiropractic services, and to contact WorkplaceNL if they experience a disruption in service from their chiropractor. WorkplaceNL will help injured workers find another chiropractor or work with their primary health care provider to consider other treatment options.

Clients are asked to contact WorkplaceNL at 1.800.563.9000 or 778.1000 for more information or assistance.
