Gonzaga High School and Hillview Academy named WorkplaceNL’s Safety Game Show Champions
Wednesday, April 13, 2016

St. John’s, NL – The eighth season of WorkplaceNL’s – Who Wants to Save a Life? game show concluded before a live studio audience in St. John’s. The team from Gonzaga High School of St. John’s captured the win in the senior high school division, and Hillview Academy of Norris Arm were champions in the junior high division (see photos of winners below).

Along with knowledge of workplace safety, each winning team brought home $5,000 for their school. The five members of the winning high school team each received a $1,000 scholarship, and the junior high champion contestants each received an iPad Air 2.

“I offer my sincerest congratulations to all students who competed in the finals for this year’s edition of WorkplaceNL’s – Who Wants to Save a Life? game show, as well as those who participated in games leading up to the play-offs,” said the Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister Responsible for WorkplaceNL. “Like any valuable life lesson, the importance of workplace safety is a message that needs to be continuously reiterated from a young age. Initiatives like this one are an effective and creative tool to help deliver that message.”

Young workers, those aged 15-24 years, consistently have a lower lost-time injury rate than the provincial rate. WorkplaceNL firmly believes that fostering a strong safety culture among young workers builds a foundation that will lead to less workplace injuries and illnesses now and in years to come.

“It is a real pleasure to see the future workforce and leaders of our province engaged and excited to learn about workplace safety,” said Leslie Galway, Chief Executive Officer, WorkplaceNL. “WorkplaceNL's goal is to empower younger workers to take action, and to help foster a culture of safety where workplace incidents are unacceptable. Developing positive safety habits early will carry forward throughout their careers.”

WorkplaceNL’s – Who Wants to Save a Life? is a trivia game designed to educate and engage youth in workplace health and safety. It was developed and funded by WorkplaceNL in partnership with the Department of Education. The game show will air province-wide on Rogers Television this fall.
